With the current economy, more people than ever are looking for an additional source of income. Many are turning to an MLM or network marketing opportunity. Unfortunately, a large percentage of them do not use the right criteria to select the best company to join. Training. MLM is a great way to make a living. But, you can only have success if you know what you are doing. Training should be delivered via several means such as webinars, conference calls, one-on-one mentoring, and live events.

Leadership. We all need someone to show us the way. A good leader will provide encouragement, a positive influence, and help you become a leader, too. Team leaders are the ones you look to for support, motivation, and mentoring. A good leader will have years of experience and a record of success. Be sure you are partnering with a leader.

System. This is really the critical one. Nothing else matters if you do not have an easy to follow, easy to share system to build your business. Successful networkers need a system for both local and long distance methods of building a business. It is important that the system you use brand you rather than your company or team. A modern system that both beginners and experienced networkers can follow will be based on the principles of attraction marketing rather than purchasing leads or working your warm market.

One of the major challenges in the MLM industry has always been finding enough good prospects to show your opportunity to. For many years, the typical methods people in network marketing used to build their business included advertising the opportunity, purchasing telephone leads and spending evenings on the phone, and approaching friends, neighbors, and relatives. Today many networkers are still being taught these old-school methods. While some are still having success this way, the majority of people in mlm are struggling!

I have found that when one of our business partners is not making the income they hoped for, it almost always comes down to them not having enough good prospects looking at their business each day. It has become increasingly difficult to generate good prospects using the old-school techniques.

For several years now I have been teaching our team members to master the art of attraction marketing to solve this challenge. With attraction marketing, it’s as if you are now the hunted rather than the hunter. You can literally have top-quality people calling you, asking about joining your team. Done properly, you eliminate wasting time with the wrong people and the rejection that comes with it. You can also eliminate a lot of advertising expense.

You have to grasp the concept that prospects will not join your business, they will join you. There are three common obstacles to mastering the concept of attraction marketing. The most frequent one I run into, especially with new networkers, is lacking the confidence or belief that they can be the kind of leader that others will look for. The second major challenge to mastering attraction marketing is not having the proper training and mentoring. Unfortunately, many people join a business without doing the proper research. Too many teams in too many businesses do not provide proper training on modern marketing techniques. Frequently, new business partners do not realize how critical this is until after they have paid their money, joined a business, and found they need help.

The third and biggest obstacle to taking full advantage of attraction marketing is not having an easy to use, easy to copy attraction marketing system. Far more important to your success in any network marketing opportunity than even the business itself, the compensation plan, or the product you market, is the system you will use to build that business. Even with the proper mindset, training, and mentoring, you still need a system you can use and share with your new team members.

Overcoming these challenges is actually easy, even if you are already in a network marketing business. And if you are looking for a business right now, let this be a major factor in your decision on which business to choose.

Use their experience and spend your time on the critical activities of exposing new prospects, following up with them, and then enrolling them and helping them duplicate the process.

Success in network marketing requires having a steady flow of interested prospects looking at your business each day. With the exception of the occasional networker who has a large circle of influence and is willing to prospect within it, networkers have to count on advertising to keep their prospecting pipeline full.

Lacking proper advertising skills not only hinders the flow of daily prospects and its resulting business growth, it also wastes the marketer’s time, money, and emotions. It doesn’t take long for a networker experiencing poor results to get frustrated and quit the business.

I have found that one of the most important parts of training we can provide our new business partners is effective marketing skills. Almost all networkers need to learn good copy writing. There are many online sources of good copy writing training.

We teach our team 4 basic ingredients that are essential to good advertising. These apply whether it’s a classified ad for local marketing or an online marketing piece such as a landing or lead capture page. Use these as both a 4 step process to evaluate any current marketing already in place and as a guideline for new advertising.

Attention. Face it, if the advertising does not grab the prospect’s attention, nothing else matters. In all advertising and marketing, the attention-grabber is a strong headline. Improving your headlines will do more for your results than any other improvement.

Interest. Once you grab the prospect’s attention, you must build their interest. This is best done by sharing benefits. Benefits make ideal sub-headlines in your marketing piece. This is where you let the prospect know what’s in it for him or her.

Desire. This builds on their interest and makes the prospect want what you’ve got. Get this step right and you will dramatically increase your conversion rates.

Action. This is where you lead the prospect to the final step. Make it clear what they need to do. Tell them to enter their first name and email address in the form, or pick up the phone and call you, or click the join now button, for example. I’ve had great success pushing people through this step by offering bonuses or discounts for immediate action.

Even with these 4 ingredients in place, all smart marketers are still constantly testing the results of one version of a marketing piece against another. That is the only way to know for sure what works best.

Over the years, I’ve been amazed by the lame excuses that hold people back from the success they could enjoy in MLM network marketing.

When excuses are holding you back in your business, you really have 2 choices…quit the business or overcome the excuse. Assuming you have a big “why” for being in your MLM opportunity, and you are in it for the long haul, it just makes sense to clearly identify any excuse that’s blocking your success and learn how to get past it.

Although I have heard literally hundreds of excuses offered for lack of success in MLM network marketing during my career, all of the excuses revolve around a few basic themes. Here are the most common excuses networkers use and how to overcome each of them.

Time. Networkers complain they don’t have enough time, live in a certain time zone, or work a certain shift. The problem really isn’t lack of time, it’s lack of direction. Start by treating your MLM like a business. Establish a set work schedule, whether it’s 5 hours per week or 20. The only activities that matter in our business are exposing new prospects to the opportunity, following up with them, and enrolling and training them to duplicate the process. Eliminate other activities.

Prospects. The excuses networkers offer include not being able to talk to friends or family about the business, not knowing enough people, getting poor quality leads, or not being good at sales. The number one cause of lack of growth in MLM network marketing is not having enough good people looking at your business each day. There are a variety of ways to generate excellent prospects, both online and locally. Every networking company and team offers training on prospecting. Learn it.

Sponsor. The frequent excuses are that a sponsor left the business, the sponsor doesn’t know what he or she is doing, or that there are no leaders in a local area. Make it your responsibility to learn the business. Learn to be a leader. Many top income earners in our industry were orphaned years ago. Reach up-line for help. Reach cross-line for help. One of the best things about networking is the willingness to share with others. Ask for help.

Downline. The usual excuse is that the downline is not productive. Face it, some people will quit, many will never do any work, some won’t return your phone calls. When team members offer these excuses, my suggestion is always the same…enroll more new business partners and help them be successful. Focus on the winners on your team. Never waste time or fret over the losers.

Economy. This is probably the weakest excuse of all. Fact is, the down economy of the last few years has actually been a blessing for our industry. More top-quality people than ever are looking for another source of income. Take advantage of the fact that it presents an opportunity to recruit up to better prospects, and that nothing will grow your business faster than recruiting up.

If you are not having the success you were hoping for as a networker, take an honest, objective look at yourself. If excuses are holding you back, identify them and take the necessary action to overcome them. Don’t let excuses block your success in MLM network marketing.
