However, there is one excuse for not joining our team that drives me nuts. I call it the money excuse. Last week I received a phone call from a gentleman who had been to my website a few weeks before. He opted in requesting more information, and had received part of a series of follow-up emails. He said he could not afford to join our team, even though we have a basic enrollment that is only $49.99!

His main reason for passing on our opportunity was that he “cannot afford it”…the money excuse. No one does a better job than our team at presenting an mlm opportunity. He had no problem with the business, the product, the comp plan or me. Just the money.

I told him that feeling he could not afford it was the very reason he should join our team. I could not think of a more compelling reason he needed to join us than the fact that he felt he could not come up with $49.99.

When a prospect tells me they have reviewed our team, our business, our marketing system, and my personal mentoring, but have decided on another opportunity, I’m OK with that. If they were an excellent candidate, I will be disappointed. Sometimes I will even be surprised. But I’m OK when they don’t join us. I know I can’t get them all. At least they made an informed decision. And I’ve got my marketing to the point where I always have more good prospects going through my system each day than I have time to follow up with.

But when they say they cannot afford it, it really drives me nuts. That’s the poorest excuse there is, usually used by those you don’t want on your team anyway.

Over the years, I have learned there are only a few options for those prospects who use the money excuse. And I am now very blunt with them. If they are really serious about creating a better future, they will find a way to get started, no matter what the enrollment cost is. If they are not that serious, they should probably remove themselves from my list and quit wasting my time.

You should take a similar approach also. Use a system that presents your opportunity properly. Keep your pipeline full of qualified prospects. You won’t have to waste time with mlm leads who use the money excuse.

Over the years, I got really good at it. I spent a lot of time training our team how to prospect over the phone. Even though I hated it with a passion, I got good results. Even though our focus is primarily online, for years I have taught our team to locate top-notch leads using business cards. And no, I am not talking about distributing business cards or drop cards. I’m talking about collecting other business people’s business cards.

This is a free marketing method that is easy to implement, easy to teach new team members to use. It is a very non-threatening technique that allows you to be selective about who gets into your prospecting pipeline. It can create an unlimited number of prospects. And, best of all, it gets results!

Once you get in the habit of looking for them, other people’s business cards are easy to find and collect. Look for community bulletin boards and boards at gas stations and convenience stores. Business cards can be found in racks or on the counter at almost any kind of small business.

Only collect cards of people who look like the kind you would like to be in business with. I look for professionals and those who have an entrepreneurial look or sales background. Real estate, insurance, other networkers all make great prospects.

I have had best results with real estate professionals, not just because of the current real estate market, but because they do basically the same things we do. In real estate, their income depends on their performance. They talk to people and build relationships…just like we do in mlm.

When you collect a business card, be sure to write the date and where you found the card on the back of it. Then it’s just a matter of approaching that prospect to see if the timing is right for them to be open to looking at another stream of income.

The easiest way to approach them is by email. The key is to see if they are interested in learning more rather than to immediately try to introduce your business to them. Here is the outline of a sample email we teach our team to use:

Hi Bob. I found your card at the gym. I am with company XYZ. We are looking to expand in your area. I am searching for a business professional who can help me and earn a substantial second income along the way. May I send you some information for your review and maybe set a time to talk later? Thanks.

The phone approach follows a similar outline. Again, the sole purpose of the phone call is to find out if they are open to looking. Don’t try to sell them. You should be on and off the phone in less than a minute.

Get in the habit of collecting business cards as you go about your day. There is no easier way to selectively pre-screen your prospects, fill your leads pipeline, and increase your MLM sponsoring.

My goals is to always have more people looking at my business each day than I have time to follow up with. When you are in that position, you can be very selective about who you spend your time with. In fact, as I sort through my leads each day, I am actually always looking for reasons to quickly disqualify certain prospects so I can focus on the best ones.

There are several types of people who are just not right for mlm network marketing. Enrolling them into your business usually does more harm than good. If you are not careful, they can waste your time, poison your attitude, and slow the growth of your organization.

Here are the most common types and the tell-tale signs to recognize them by.

Deadbeats and those suffering from the “broke mentality.” They will ask if your business has a start-up cost, if they can send you a money order to get started, or why they have to pay to get a “job.” Some of them will even ask if you will help with their initial investment.

Negative people, those with negative spouses or partners, and excuse-makers. They blame others for their circumstances and have an excuse for everything. Sometimes they will tell you their spouse or partner is holding them back from joining the business. They spend their time trying to figure out why your business won’t work.

MLM junkies. They jump from one business to another. It’s always the previous company that held them back rather than their own performance. Typically, they have been in several businesses in the last 12 months.

Know-it-alls and other time-wasters. These prospects love to tell you about how much they know. They rarely turn out to be successful as they are not trainable. They are the kind that is always looking to reinvent the wheel rather than follow your team’s system.

Probably the most damage that enrolling these prospects can do is pull you away from working with the right people on your team.

Learn to think of prospecting as a sorting process. Quickly disqualify those who are not right for your MLM business so you can focus on the winners. It’s easy to do if you have a steady flow of new leads every day.

Our warm market, made up of our friends, neighbors, and Uncle Bob, are usually not the best prospects for our business. Too bad, because most new networkers are still trained to make a list of 100 or more names of their warm market and then start building their mlm business by approaching them.

This leads to a very low rate of success. The majority of warm market prospects are not even interested in, let alone looking for an mlm opportunity. Many in your warm market may hear you out because of your relationship, but 9 times out of 10 you are wasting your time and setting yourself up for rejection.

One of the biggest reasons I was able to become very successful at mlm sponsoring is that early on I learned how to generate my own mlm leads via attraction marketing. I have found that it is important to generate leads very specific to mlm network marketing for best results.

All of my leads start out as contacts generated online by opting in at one of my websites or blogs. All advertising to attract contacts to me is centered on topics relating to mlm network marketing.

Once contacts are in my follow-up system, I build a relationship with them. I provide free training, tips, and other value, and brand myself. Nothing on my websites or blogs promotes my mlm company by name. When the time is right, the contacts approach me for information on my business. At that point, I consider them a lead.

The leads you work should all be actively searching for an mlm opportunity. They should already know you. If you’ve done it correctly, you have already shown them you are a leader and that you have a proven system to share with them. They already know you can help them succeed.

Again, the key is, when the timing is right, the leads contact you!
