A good MLM mentor can make the difference between failure, success, and huge success for most people involved in network marketing. Choosing the right mentor may be the most important decision a new networker makes. I have taught networkers for years that the choice of a mentor is even more important than the choice of which particular company to join!

Sadly, many people in network marketing do not have a good mentor. And there seem to be several reasons for it.

One of the major reasons is that most people who are new to mlm just don’t realize how important their choice of a mentor is. Another is that many network marketers don’t take the time to choose wisely. Maybe they get caught up in the hype and excitement of the business. Maybe they are in too big of a hurry to get started. But, the most common reason is that the majority of networkers don’t know exactly what to look for in a good mlm mentor.

Here are the key qualities of a good mentor.

Your mentor must have experience in the industry. You will want help building your business both offline and online. Ask exactly how you will be coached to work your business. What is the system you will follow. If they tell you they have an exclusive hot lead source, that’s a red flag. Find someone who can demonstrate they have mastered the Internet.

Your mentor must be accessible. You need someone you can get in touch with day or night. When you have a hot prospect to do a 3-way call with during the day and your mentor is at his/her job then, that’s not much help. Join someone who is a full-time networker. Call your prospective mentor’s office at 10am. If they don’t answer live, see how long it takes them to get back to you.

Your mentor must have a likable personality and leadership qualities. You are going to spend a lot of time working together over the coming years. Take a few minutes to get to know him/her. They must have good communication skills, be well-organized, and know how to treat others with respect.

Your network marketing success depends on it. Take your time and partner with a good mlm mentor.

A good mlm mentor is an important key to success in our industry.

For years, I have been teaching others that the mentor you work with will usually have more to do with your success than your company’s compensation plan, the product or products you market, or even the particular mlm company you join. A good mentor is that important!

As a full-time networker, I talk to many others in our industry each week. I am always amazed at how many people have a lousy mentor. I am the first to acknowledge that ultimately we are all responsible for our own success or failure. However, for a large number of networkers, just working with the right mentor could make the difference between success and failure.

Unfortunately, many times people do not do realize what kind of mentor they really have until after they are in a business. Spend a few minutes thinking about your mentor. Here are some clear indicators of a poor mentor. See if any of these fit.

Always too busy to help you right now.
Not good about returning your phone calls in a timely manner, or not returning them at all.
Doesn’t seem to know how to help you build your business.
Does not have a system for you to follow.
Trying to make money off their downline by selling them tools, training materials, or leads.
Their answer to your lack of progress is always buy more leads, work harder, or similar vague answers.
Failing to follow through on promises.
Making false representations.
When you Google their name, others have reported bad experiences.
Their personality is not that of a leader.

If you are already in a business and find that your mentor is not what you deserve, you have an important decision to make. If you continue to follow the path you are already on, your odds of huge success will not be good in most cases.

If you have a significant business built and are earning good money in spite of things, search upline for someone to work with. Keep contacting people upline from you until you find the right mentor. One of the great things about network marketing is that teamwork is rewarded. Leaders in your upline have a financial interest in your success.

If you have not built a significant business yet, it may be best to cut your losses and start over with a new mentor in a new company. Learn from your experiences with this mentor. You will know better what to look for next time.

A good mentor can impact your success more than anything else. Choose your MLM mentor carefully.

MLM mentors…Do you have one? Do you need one to be successful?

This surprises most people in network marketing…but I have found that the real key to your success is NOT necessarily the compensation plan, the product or products you market, or even the particular company you join.

If you are like 9 network marketers out of 10, the real key to your success will be the system you use to build your business and the mentor you work with!

A good MLM mentor, with a proven track record, can provide you with the right system, training, and coaching to shorten your learning curve. He or she will be there to celebrate your successes and help pull you up when you are down. You’ll save wasted time, money, and frustration…ultimately resulting in more success.

I’ve seen countless examples of good people in what I consider to be good companies fail miserably, in spite of a lot of hard work. And a lot of times it wasn’t their fault…they just didn’t have a good system and MLM mentor to follow.

Conversely, there are many hugely successful network marketers making a nice living with companies, compensation plans, and/or products that I might not consider to be the best in the industry, but they are successful because they do have a good mentor.

If you are already in an MLM network marketing business, working hard, but not meeting your goals…this could be the reason.

If you are in the process of selecting a business (or re-selecting one), let this be your #1 criteria. It can impact your success more than anything else. So choose your MLM mentor wisely.
